Mourning the Temple
The 17th of Tammuz fast marks the annniversary of the breach of the Old City walls of Jerusalem in the Jewish calender. At its close, mourners descended on the Western Wall, one of the last intact remnants of the ancient religious site to pray. Some Ultra Orthodox covered themselves in sackcloth and rubbed ash on their foreheads to symbolize their mourning.
